Description | Saying a decision is still a few weeks away, former Gov. Jim Edgar on Wednesday said the odds are "50-50" that he will try to regain his old job, but he acknowledged that his wife has misgivings about a political comeback.
Still, Edgar sounded like a candidate when he said first-term Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich had to "steal" funds earmarked for state pensions to pay for a burgeoning state budget. A Blagojevich political adviser contended Edgar had shorted pension funds as a corporate board member.
When Edgar's name first surfaced as a potential Republican candidate in May, he said the chances that he would run were longer than 10-to-1. But in an appearance outside Tribune Tower, Edgar, a racehorse owner, gave even odds on his own candidacy.
Providing some insight into his thoughts as he weighs whether to seek the job he held from 1991 to 1999, he stressed his most important consideration was the thoughts of his family, especially his wife, Brenda.
"On the personal side, my family kind of feels like we've been through this, we've done this and we've done our time," Edgar said. "Brenda will be a major factor in my final decision. I think Brenda has some misgivings, but she has also said it's your decision." |
