TRENTON, Aug. 17 - Throughout the New Jersey governor's race, Douglas R. Forrester, the Republican candidate, has been relentless in criticizing Senator Jon S. Corzine's ties to the Democratic power brokers who have given the state its notorious political reputation.
But Mr. Forrester also has had financial dealings with an array of county political leaders, including one high-profile Democratic power broker. He has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Republican Party organizations and candidates, public records show, and paid two county leaders to work for his pharmacy benefits company.
His company, BeneCard Services, does business with a company controlled by George E. Norcross III, the Camden County Democratic leader whose aggressive fund-raising and bare-knuckle style of negotiating has come to symbolize the state's machine politics.
Aides to Mr. Forrester said it was misleading to compare his interactions with county political leaders to those of Mr. Corzine, who has given more than $8 million to Democratic candidates and committees since 2000. Those donations led to accusations that he was buying the nomination and might later be beholden to party leaders seeking sweetheart deals for themselves or their allies. |
