Description | Congressman has emergency surgery
Wednesday, August 10, 2005
From staff reports
Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, is in good spirits after undergoing an emergency appendectomy Tuesday morning at an Idaho hospital, his staff reported.
Melancon, who was scheduled to address an Idaho meeting of the American Sugar Alliance, felt ill and, accompanied by his wife, Alida, traveled to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center near Ketchum shortly after midnight Tuesday, spokesman Ellery Gould said. The hospital diagnosed the burst appendix and performed the surgery that morning, Gould said.
He quoted Melancon as saying, "I feel tired, but more than anything, I feel grateful for the good care I've received."
Gould said there were no complications and that he expects Melancon to be released soon.
"It takes more than a bum appendix to keep a Cajun down," Gould said Melancon told him.
