Description | BATON ROUGE -- Fox McKeithen, Louisiana's charismatic five-term secretary of state with a flair for storytelling and a passion for politics, died Saturday from an infection at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, his family said. He was 58.
Mr. McKeithen, who had been paralyzed from the shoulders down in a fall at his home in February, entered the hospital June 21 suffering from a fever and an infection, secretary of state's office spokeswoman Jennifer Marusak said.
The Feb. 17 fall injured his spinal column between the third and fourth vertebrae. The cause of the accident has not been disclosed.
Mr. McKeithen spent the last months of his life in and out of hospitals. His condition deteriorated quickly after his most recent hospitalization, sources said. On Friday, he quietly submitted a letter of resignation, relieving himself of the post he'd held since 1987.
