Description | "KEYPORT — After 20 years of being a staunch supporter of the Republican party, Mayor John Merla has switched his affiliation to independent.
Last year, Merla made a failed attempt to run for Monmouth County freeholder and helped establish the Monmouth County GOP for Change, a successful effort to unseat former county Republican chairman William F. Dowd.
However, since February, Merla has lost key allies throughout the county following his arrest on charges of bribery and extortion by the FBI that month.
...
"I saw more Democrats come to my mother's funeral than Republicans from the state and county," Merla said. "For me, that was the last straw."
