Description | By Peter Savodnik
WARWICK, R.I. — The Warwick Station, should it ever get built, would shuttle hundreds of thousands of travelers yearly to and from the T.F. Green Airport via Amtrak trains, Boston commuter rail and sleek moving walkways.
It would enable visitors from Connecticut and Massachusetts to fly out of the airport, 12 miles from Providence, it would help shuttle white-collar commuters to their jobs in one of the office parks outside the city, and it would further revitalize the economy along Narragansett Bay, once a textile and fishing hub.
It could also help decide next year’s Senate race in Rhode Island, where Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee is certain to face a strong challenge in this overwhelmingly Democratic state.
The $75 million station — which has been almost entirely funded but faces logistical hurdles on Capitol Hill — is quintessential Chafee, fusing business and environmental interests.
As one of 30 senators on the conference committee helping to hammer out a final version of the transportation reauthorization bill, the senator has made the station his No. 1 legislative priority. |
