DescriptionBATON ROUGE -- Rape and incest victims must be informed about alternatives to abortion but do not have to wait 24 hours before undergoing the procedure, a House panel said Thursday.

The Committee on Health and Welfare rewrote, then unanimously approved, House Bill 242 by Rep. A.G. Crowe, R-Slidell, and sent it to the full House. Crowe approved the changes, which removed the requirement that rape and incest victims wait 24 hours after meeting with a doctor before having an abortion, as other women are now required to do.

In its amended form, Crowe's bill says rape and incest victims must be offered the same "informed consent" information about abortion as all other women receive under the state's Women's Right to Know Law.
