Description | Jun Choi changed the direction of Edison politics when he won the Democratic mayoral nomination last night.
Choi, a first-time candidate for office, defeated three-term Mayor George Spadoro by more than 1,000 votes.
Choi surprised Edison Democrats by breaking with the party's mainstream and announcing a mayoral run even though he had been raising money to run for filled state Assembly seats in the 18th Legislative District.
The political newcomer defeated the party stalwart by campaigning against a Planning Board-approved Wal-Mart, highlighting the problems of overcrowded schools and convincing residents that overdevelopment had led to higher taxes. |
