Descriptionfrom the article:

Patrick Cannon ended his campaign for Charlotte mayor Wednesday and announced that he won't seek re-election to the City Council, hurting Democrats' best chance in more than a decade to recapture the city's top job.

Cannon's sudden departure shook up the city's political scene and cut short a potentially vigorous challenge to Republican Mayor Pat McCrory.

During a noon news conference at his Trade Street office, Cannon cited the recent deaths of two relatives and a renewed focus on his family.

During his three-month campaign, Cannon did little to distinguish himself from McCrory, an ally on many issues over the past decade. In recent weeks, several Democrats said, Cannon's campaign seemed lackluster.

Cannon, 38, said Wednesday that his decision was purely personal and had nothing to do with his assessment of whether he could win. Cannon had not announced any major donations or fundraisers, but said he had two events scheduled for next week.
