State Sen. Carole Pankau said Thursday that she is jumping into the race for the 6th Congressional District seat that Republican U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde has held for more than 30 years and is retiring.
Pankau, of Roselle, is the third Republican to enter the campaign after Hyde announced in April that he will retire at the end of his term. Pankau said she will position herself as a fiscal conservative and a social moderate.
"It comes down to is this the right time in my life to pursue something like this and I believe it is," said Pankau, 57. "I think the district out there wants to see a contest and they want to see and hear different views and then they'll make their minds up as voters."
State Sen. Peter Roskam, of Wheaton, and former DuPage County Recorder J.P. "Rick" Carney are also seeking the Republican nomination in the 2006 race. Former state Rep. Tom Johnson (R-West Chicago) was weighing a bid, but has decided not to run.
For Pankau, this is the second time in the last few years that she has sought to succeed a DuPage County Republican powerhouse. Last fall, she emerged from a contentious primary campaign to win the 23rd District seat held for more than 30 years by former Senate President James "Pate" Philip. |
