BENTONVILLE - Benton County Republicans asked why the party's candidate lost the Senate president pro tempore race, and their state chairman replied he was not at liberty to fully discuss his role.
Sen. Dave Bisbee, R-Rogers, would have assumed the title through seniority, but Senate rules were changed to require an election. The Senate decided to elect a president pro tempore by secret ballot, and to keep the vote total a secret when the winner was announced, party chairman Sen. Gilbert Baker, R-Conway, told the Benton County Republican Committee Tuesday night at the committee's monthly meeting in Bentonville. The election was held last month, after the close of other business in the legislative session.
In view of the Senate's policy, Baker said, he thought it would not be appropriate to openly endorse any candidate. Therefore, he did not endorse either candidate. Baker said his vote would also remain secret, out of respect for the Senate's wishes. |
