Description | Two weeks after he surprised his colleagues by announcing a run for mayor, Tacoma City Councilman Bill Evans dropped another one on them: He’s pulling out of the race.
Evans said Thursday he came to the conclusion after two weeks of campaigning that he didn’t have the time or energy to run against Mayor Bill Baarsma, so he’s pulling the plug on his campaign.
“When you run against an incumbent, it’s a huge commitment,” Evans said. “Over the last two-week period, I realized it was just more of a commitment than I could commit to … I realized I am a community-activist type, not a career politician.”
Evans said he was honored by the support he received from many in the community.
“The last few days have been difficult,” Evans said. “But I feel really good about the decision.”
His decision to run against Baarsma, a frequent political ally with a similar constituency, upset Baarsma.
But Evans said he doesn’t anticipate any problem working together in the future.
Baarsma said he was relieved he wouldn’t have to run against someone he considered a friend, but he didn’t plan to change anything about his campaign.
“I have the highest degree of respect for Bill and any decision he makes,” Baarsma said. |
