Description | CHISINAU (Reuters) - Communist Vladimir Voronin easily won re-election as president of ex-Soviet Moldova on Monday and pledged to forge ahead with his program of moving out of Moscow's shadow and into the European mainstream.
Voronin was once an ally of Moscow but now accuses the Kremlin of meddling in his tiny country by refusing to abide by promises to move troops out of its separatist Dnestr region.
He secured 75 votes in parliament, 14 more than required in the sole former Soviet republic where the elected assembly holds most of the powers.
Voronin's victory firmly anchored Moldova -- along with Ukraine and Georgia -- in an informal bloc of ex-Soviet nations that have turned away from Moscow and now look westward with the ultimate aim of joining the European Union. |
