Description | "Ellen Karcher's victory in the 12th District Democratic primary contest for a Senate nomination Tuesday was a key win for the Monmouth County party, which backed her, party leaders said yesterday.
Karcher, president of the Marlboro Township Council, defeated Oceanport Mayor Gordon Gemma in a nasty primary fight that included accusations of campaign finance irregularities and vandalism. Karcher, 39, received 3,325 votes to Gemma's 2,245, according to unofficial tallies, and will face longtime incumbent Republican John O. Bennett III, co-president of the state Senate, in the general election Nov. 4.
Throughout the campaign, Karcher touted her backing by the county organization as evidence of deep, grass-roots support. Gemma was backed by Commerce Bank executive George E. Norcross III, who has fought bitterly with Bennett over issues in the Legislature."
