Description | COURTHOUSE -- Republican Montgomery County Commissioner James R. Matthews yesterday jumped off the fence and landed like an elephant on the back of GOP Chairman Frank R. Bartle's bid for re-election as party chairman.
Matthews, who previously had been neutral in the upcoming battle for party chair between Bartle and Upper Gwynedd Republican Committee Chairman Robert J. Kerns, in an unscheduled press conference called on Bartle to withdraw from the contest.
But Matthews, the chairman of the Springfield GOP, stopped short of endorsing Kerns, stating that Kerns is the only challenger in the contest at this time.
A shell-shocked Bartle drove to the party's headquarters in Norristown, holding his own press conference late yesterday afternoon to announce he had no intention of withdrawing his candidacy for the chairmanship that will be decided by the party's 800 committee people in a vote slated for April 27. |
