U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons’ fiery condemnation of “tree-hugging liberals” in Elko last week wasn’t his own work. Nor did he credit the author of the speech, which garnered national attention when it was first delivered to a small gathering in Alabama two years ago.
Much of Gibbons’ address at Elko’s Lincoln Day Dinner mimicked nearly word for word a copyrighted speech written by Alabama Auditor Beth Chapman, including references to “tree-hugging, hippie, Birkenstock-wearing, tie-died liberals.”
Gibbons also lifted references to abortion and a call to send liberals to Iraq to act as “human shields” from Chapman’s speech.
In a telephone interview Thursday, Chapman said she learned about Gibbons’ use of her speech after reading an article in the Elko Daily Free Press. She said he did not seek her permission to use her work.
Chapman said Gibbons called and apologized to her Thursday morning.
“He was very gracious about it,” Chapman said, adding she was “flattered and honored” that he used the speech.
Gibbons, a Republican contender for the 2006 governor’s race, has drawn fire from Nevada Democrats who called his remarks “bombastic” and “inflammatory.” |
