RICHMOND — If state Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr., R-Winchester, does intend to run for governor, he has significant ground to make up in fund-raising, according to the most recent campaign finance reports.
While Republican Jerry Kilgore and Democrat Tim Kaine, the front-runners for the gubernatorial nod from their respective parties, both reportedly had more than $3 million in cash on hand as of Dec. 31, 2004, a political action committee for Potts, Vision for Virginia, had just more than $42,000 on the same date.
Several sources confirmed last month that Potts was considering entering the 2005 race for governor as an independent.
Potts said last month he wouldn’t announce his plans until after this year’s General Assembly session is completed.
He did not comment on the finance reports Wednesday.
A four-term state senator, Potts actually raised more money in his Senate account — $90,961.38 — than Vision for Virginia brought in during the recent reporting period, which ran from July 1 through Dec. 31, 2004. |
