Description | CHICAGO (CNN) -- Former Chicago Mayor Michael Bilandic -- the man who succeeded legendary Mayor Richard J. Daley in 1976 -- died of a heart attack Tuesday night in the coronary care unit of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.
Bilandic, 78, became mayor after Daley died in 1976. He lost the Democratic primary against Jane Byrne in 1979. Some observers believe Bilandic failed in his bid for nomination because of his handling of the Chicago blizzard of January 1979.
He later served on the Illinois Supreme Court.
