RICHMOND, Va. -- Del. J. Chapman Petersen entered the crowded field of candidates running for lieutenant governor Monday, pledging to outwork his rivals for the Democratic nomination.
Petersen, in his second term in the House from Fairfax City, is the first Democrat to formally kick off his campaign for the job that is largely ceremonial except for presiding over the state Senate.
At least four Democrats and four Republicans have said they plan to seek the office.
"This was not a battle I anticipated taking on eight months ago but, as I have learned in politics, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself," Petersen told a room packed with supporters and campaign volunteers at a state Capitol news conference. |
