Description | By becoming someone else, Bob Graham eventually became himself.
As a shy state senator running for governor, he spent days doing different jobs -- from teaching to laying asphalt to shrimping -- drawing something the Miami Lakes millionaire couldn't buy: attention.
The "workdays," as his 1978 campaign called them, were the key to winning votes. More importantly, they turned Graham into a mature politician, who was less aloof and more attuned to Florida.
His understanding of the state's voters, who came to trust him and sense he was above partisanship, led him to the governor's mansion. Then it led him to three terms in the U.S. Senate.
