Description | U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl's familiarity with border issues would serve the state well if President Bush were to pick the Arizona Republican as his new secretary of homeland security, Gov. Janet Napolitano said Wednesday.
Napolitano made the statement during a news conference in response to a question about Kyl and the vacancy created by Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge's resignation Tuesday. She said it would help Arizona to have a homeland security secretary already knowledgeable about border issues.
While Ridge had experience as the former governor of Pennsylvania, he didn't have any familiarity about problems facing Southwestern border states, Napolitano said. advertisement
"That was a continual education process," she said.
On the other hand, Kyl "is very, very familiar with the border and very familiar with the fact that the Arizona border, of all of the border states, has the most increase in border trafficking and so forth," Napolitano said. "To have a secretary of homeland security with that familiarity would definitely be a good thing for Arizona."
