Description | The Seattle Post-Intelligencer
By Dan Raley
Fourteen years ago, he legally changed his name. You may have heard of him.
Mike the Mover.
Oh yeah, the guy who took on the industry he's named after, helping deregulate it in favor of the independent, unlicensed carrier, which is him.
The guy who runs for public office each year merely to keep himself visible and maybe generate some business; lately, it's Mover for Governor -- or vote for me, and I'll help Gary Locke pack up his stuff.
The guy who turns up at Mariners games or in any number of downtown settings dressed as Gen. Robert E. Lee. He's actually a harmless re-enactment enthusiast -- if not a skilled attention-seeker who knows how to get a free beer -- annually heading to the South to play out his Civil War fantasies.
Through the years, only the uniform and name have changed for this Seattle original, who's always tried to test limits.
Three decades ago, he was Mike Shanks. No wonder he changed his name; it sounded like something that should be pinned on a bad golfer.
These days, the former Mike Shanks, 51, keeps his home and business in Snohomish County. Divorced without kids, he creates mischief with his girlfriend of 13 years, Patricia Hutton. He's been a professional boxer, run a homeless shelter, worked construction and continues to entertain and pester people. He eats better.
He didn't hate being Mike Shanks. It's just that this other persona is so much more fun. Besides, John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe weren't their real names, as he likes to point out.
"Even my mom just calls me Mover," he said. |
