DescriptionRichard Vinroot shocked the North Carolina political world this afternoon, withdrawing from the expected Republican runoff for governor.
His decision hands the GOP nomination to former state Sen. Patrick Ballantine of Wilmington and avoids what appeared a possible combative campaign before the Aug. 17 runoff.

Vinroot, the former Charlotte mayor who finished second in Tuesday's primary, said Republicans needed to unite behind one candidate to defeat Democratic Gov. Mike Easley this fall.

"I have made a spiritual decision in this case," Vinroot said. "My decision is to not call for a runoff."

Since neither candidate collected 40 percent of the vote, Vinroot had the option of demanding a runoff. The decision allows Ballantine to immediately begin campaigning against Easley, who is seeking a second term.
