Description | MONTGOMERY -- Some Alabama Republicans want to recruit U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions of Mobile to run for governor in 2006, even if such a candidacy opposes incumbent Bob Riley, according to GOP officials and activists.
The move comes less than a year-and-a-half into Riley's four-year term, which has been defined largely by voters' 2-to-1 drubbing of his billion-dollar tax package in September and by internal GOP struggles because of the proposal. The intra-party effort to recruit a top name to challenge Riley further illuminates that ongoing tension.
Sessions, who refused to take a public position on Riley's tax plan last year, issued a statement through his spokesman late Wednesday stating that he is "not interested" in running for governor. "I am a strong supporter of Bob Riley," Sessions said in the statement. "He is working his heart out for Alabama, and my advice to him is to keep at it."
