Description | Political newcomer Mike Miles shocked Democratic state conventioneers Saturday by winning more delegates than supposed front runner Ken Salazar.
Miles received a surprising 51 percent of the vote, leaving Salazar, the state attorney general, with 49 percent.
Miles, an educator from Fountain, built momentum in the weeks leading up to the convention. In his campaign, Miles has emphasized that he represents party ideals far more than the centrist Salazar.
As a result, a primary will be held Aug. 10 to choose who will vie for the chance to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, an Ignacio Republican who has endorsed Pete Coors over former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer for the GOP nomination. |
