Description | ATLANTA - Self-made millionaire and south Georgia native William Cliff Oxford made a last-minute entry Friday into the already crowded race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Zell Miller.
Oxford, a 41-year-old who goes by the name of ''Cliff,'' was born and raised in Waycross. He earned a fortune when he built and sold his technology-support company, STI Knowledge.
He joins seven other Democratic candidates and three Republicans who all want to fill the vacancy being created by Miller, a Democrat and popular former governor. An independent and a Libertarian Party candidate also are running.
Oxford, who now lives in Marietta, perplexed many around the Capitol earlier this week when he said a Senate campaign wasn't in his future. But with minutes to spare on Friday morning, he drove to Atlanta to qualify as a candidate after a change-of-heart on Thursday night.
Qualifying puts Oxford's name on the July 20 Democratic Party primary ballot. The winner of the election, and a likely Aug. 10 runoff, will go head-to-head with the winner of a three-way Republican primary in the Nov. 2 general election.
The Republicans in the race are U.S. Rep. Johnny Isakson, a 59-year-old from Marietta; former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain, a 58-year-old from Atlanta; and businessman Mac Collins, a 59-year-old from Jackson.
The Democratic field includes several attorneys who are mostly unknown in the political world, as well as two elected officials - U.S. Rep. Denise Majette, a 48-year-old from Decatur, and state Sen. Mary Hodges Squires, a 46-year-old from Norcross.
