| Description | The City of Farmington, named after Farmington, New York, is one of Dakota County's oldest communities and was on the map before Minnesota became a state
This "village of farms" in the heart of Dakota County was initially settled by pioneer families from New York and later by Civil War veterans who became Farmington's first merchants, manufacturers, doctors, lawyers and educators that provided goods and services to the community and the surrounding townships.
In 1872, Farmington became the second community to incorporate and organize a municipal government in Dakota County. For 132 years, Farmington has served the needs and interests of its residents by providing quality public services, personal and property protection, attractive amenities and a healthy environment.

Farmington is a rapidly growing city located in the south edge of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. It has an estimated 2004 population of over 18,000 people. The population doubled between 1990 and 2000. It possesses traditional downtown area, new growt housing areas, farms, open space and natural resources such as the Vermillion River
