DescriptionMansfield, an ex-mining seat, has been Labour since 1923 and produced comfortable leads for the party right up until the 1980s. During the miners' dispute of 1984, many Nottinghamshire coalfield workers objected to Arthur Scargill's decision to strike without a ballot and therefore continued to work. There were scenes of violence between working miners (mainly from the UDM) and NUM pickets from Yorkshire. Pro-NUM Alan Meale won the seat for Labour in 1987 by just 56 votes - making Mansfield the party's most marginal seat after that election. But five years on he romped home with a majority in excess of 11,700. This is almost identical to his winning margin in 2001, though in 1997 it had risen to 20,500. This is an almost entirely white constituency where 10.4% still work in mining, quarrying and construction. Since the closure of Mansfield Colliery in 1998 regeneration investment money has brought new jobs, for example through the American plastics manufacturer, Plastek. In the most recent local elections of 2003, Independents came from nowhere to take 25 seats from Labour and win control of the council.
