Description | South Shields is on the southern entrance to the River Tyne, a working-class, satellite town in the Newcastle conurbation, linked to it by the metro. It is also a seaside resort. Shipbuilding and coal mining were the traditional industries here but, as they have declined, light industries have taken their place. More than half the population are homeowners while a third rent from the local authority. This has been traditional Labour territory since 1935 when J Chuter Ede, who was to become Attlee's Home Secretary, regained it. More recently, South Shields has had another long-serving member. Dr David Clark (first elected in Colne Valley in 1970) became MP here in 1979 and retired in 2001. He was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1997-8. The present incumbent is the former head of Tony Blair's Policy Unit, Cabinet Office minister, David Miliband. He had a majority of more than 14,000 (46.3%) in 2001.
