Description | This new constituency comprises the old Edinburgh South seat except Prestonfield, which goes to the new Edinburgh East seat, and includes Fairmilehead from the old Edinburgh Pentlands and South Morningside which was shared with the old Edinburgh Pentlands seat. The constituency is a portion of Edinburgh that stretches from just south of the city centre to the by-pass which rings the capital. The elegant villas and flats of Morningside, Marchmont and Mechiston are stereotypical Edinburgh; areas which have made their mark in the city's literary incarnations, such as Muriel Spark's novel The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie. Further west are the many detached properties of Fairmilehead, nestling under the Braid Hills to the west - this ward regularly has the highest electoral turnout of any in Scotland. To the east are the peripheral council estates of Gilmerton, Kaimes and Moredun.
