Description | Apart from a short period of Conservative control during the Thatcher era, Cardiff West has been a Labour seat since 1929. The former Speaker of the House George Thomas held this seat from 1945 - 1983. In 1987, the seat was held by pro-devolutionist Rhodri Morgan who stood down in 2001 to concentrate on his National Assembly career, where he has been First Minister since 2000. Now regarded as one of Labour's safest seats, Rhodri Morgan increased his share of the vote substantially in 1997, and again in the first assembly elections in 1999. The new MP Kevin Brennan kept the vote high for Labour in 2001 despite a small 2.8% swing to the Tories. It contains a number of suburban middle-class areas such as Llandaff and Radyr, large working-class areas like Ely, Pentrebane and Riverside, as well as districts such as Pontcanna and Canton, with their high concentration of Welsh-speakers and non-Tory voting middle-class residents.
