Description | Macarthur was first contested when the parliament was increased in size at the 1949 election. It is named after Captain John Macarthur, an early settler and influential force in the first days of settlement. Macarthur's introduction of the merino sheep breed into Australia has seen him credited as the founder of the Australian wool industry. |
