Description | The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill passed by both chambers of the Indian Parliament on August 5-6, 2019 and signed into law on August 9, 2019 splits the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories; Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Governor of the State seized control on June 20, 2018 after the Chief Minister failed to form a government. The Federal Government in the form of its President then took control on December 19, 2018 and assumed all executive duties, effectively dissolving the position of Chief Minister.
In retrospect, the federal government mounted deceptive maneuvres in anticipation of the Bill's passage and the state's restructuring.
The bill substitutes the duties of a Governor for that of a Lieutenant Governor for Jammu and Kashmir and a Lieutenant Governor for Ladakh. Reports suggests that the current Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Satya Pal Malik, will assume both posts [Link]
The change will take effect on October 31, 2019. |
