The Senate consists of 50 members indirectly elected by Community and Regional Parliaments and an additional 10 senators - six Dutch-speaking and four French-speaking - who are coopted (gecoöpteerd or coopté) from the House of Representatives. The Senate must by law be composed of at least 20 men and at least 20 women Senators.
