Northernmost region of Western Norway and one of only two counties in Norway (the other being Vestland) that state-sanction the use of the Nynorsk written language (the other being Bokmål, which is more commonly used). County is also one of two counties in Norway (with Trøndelag) informally designated as Central Norway. County contains 26 municipalities, its largest being Ålesund.
