Description |
After a new constitution was approved by constitutional referendum by 92% of voters on July 30, 2018, the president was permitted to serve two consecutive five-year terms. The current president, Azali Assoumani, chose to run for another five-year term in a vote moved forward to 2019 instead of 2021. Previously, at the launch of the Union of the Comoros (Union des Comores; الاتحاد القمر) on December 23, 2001, initiated upon military takeover on April 30, 1999, there was a one-term, four-year rotational system in place to share the presidency between three islands; Anjouan (term: 2006-2010), Mohéli (term: 2010-2014) and the Grande Comore (term: 2014-2018).
