Description |
The okrug was established as Ostyak–Vogul National Okrug (Остя́ко-Вогу́льский национа́льный о́круг) on December 10, 1930, and renamed the Khanty-Mansi National Okrug in 1977.
Region was inhabited by the Khanty and Mansi peoples. 'Yugra' (or Iuhra, a derivation of the 'Ugric' languages spoken in the region) is the collective name for these peoples.
The people and local governments of the okrug preferred the name 'Yugra' over 'Kanty-Mansi' and appended it to the official name in 2003.
