Description |
It is estimated that some £250m is spent annually by tourists in Bournemouth. Much of the industry is based in this constituency. Further west there are many smaller hotels and guest houses in Westbourne. In 1984 the Bournemouth International Centre was opened, allowing development of the 'out-of-season' conference trade. It is a building familiar to politicians, journalists and TV news watchers as a venue for the party political conferences. Neil Kinnock made his now legendary attack on the militants here in 1985. It was also where Mrs Thatcher made her last conference speech in 1990. Bournemouth West covers the town's centre, as well as suburbs to the north and west of the city. These areas contain the most working class sections of the town, such as Kinson and Wallisdown. Labour overtook the Liberal Democrats in 2001 to claim second place in the seat with 28.8% of the vote.
