Description This constituency was held in its various manifestations from 1950-97 by the Conservative former prime minister, Sir Edward Heath. The then Father of the House decided to retire at the 1997 general election and the seat was the scene of a highly-contested selection (including 10 former MPs) which was won by former Whip and Shrewsbury MP, Derek Conway. He managed to hold it despite a huge swing to Labour. In 2001 he held on with a slightly increased majority and vote share. His views, especially on Europe, are to the right of his predecessor's. Old Bexley and Sidcup is in the London borough of Bexley, on the south-eastern edge of London, bordering Kent. This is suburban, 95% white, low unemployment, commuter-land. Many workers travel into central London by train (the fifth highest proportion in the country) on a congested suburban rail network.
