Description |
Ealing Southall is centred on the outer west London district of Southall, the most westerly of the three Ealing constituencies and an area of rich ethnic diversity. This is one of the most populous areas in the country, ranking fourth with 120,000 people. Fewer than 48% of the population are white: 34% are of Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin. Some wards, such as Broadway and Green are 90% Asian. There is also a considerable Chinese community. Unemployment is above average, at 6%. A large number of workers are employed at nearby Heathrow Airport. A major rail accident happened here in September 1997 in which seven people were killed and hundreds injured. Since 1992, Ealing Southall has had an Indian-born Labour MP, Piara Khabra. He replaced the de-selected Syd Bidwell, who then stood as Independent Labour, winning 4,660 votes. Mr Khabra's majority soared in 1997 to 21,423 but dropped back to 13,683 in 2001 on a lower turn-out. One of the reasons for this was the intervention of an independent candidate, Avtar Lit, chief executive of London's Sunrise Radio - a mainly Asian station - who polled 12.3%, the third highest independent vote after Richard Taylor (Wyre Forest) and Martin Bell.
