Description |
Ealing North was created in 1950 and has been a typical marginal ever since - close to the London averages in terms of owner-occupation, council tenancy and class. It does have one notable ethnic feature - it is home to the third largest Polish community in the world, after Warsaw and Chicago. The Polish air force was based at RAF Northolt during the Second World War. The constituency fell to the winning party in 1964, 1979 and 1997. Until 1979 it was represented by the late William (Lord) Molloy. He lost in 1979 to Tory Harry Greenway, who stayed until 1997 when he in turn was defeated by the present incumbent, Labour's Stephen Pound by over 9,000 votes. Mr Pound held on in 2001 with an increased majority of 11,837 or 26.3%. Ealing North is a mixture of hamlets, towns, villages and communities, bound together by many things - but most of all by the boundary commissioner. There is some industry still in the constituency. Glaxo Wellcome has its headquarters here and this is a key source of local employment.
