Description |
Apart from the northernmost suburbs of Ipswich, most of this seat is covered by undulating, unspoilt farmland. It is geographically huge and stretches from Christchurch Park in Ipswich, the sprawling suburb of Kesgrave, to Palgrave and Mendham on the Norfolk border and from Coton in the west to Little Glenham in the east. There are a number of historical sites here, including many medieval churches and Framlingham Castle, where Mary Tudor sought refuge during the nine-day reign of Lady Jane Grey. The economy is based largely on agriculture and associated industries. The north Ipswich suburbs of this seat make up about a quarter of the electorate, and show a strong Labour bias though not enough, thus far, to unseat Tory MP Michael Lord.
