The constituency of St Albans has, as its centre, the cathedral city of the same name. A prosperous place, this historic city contains a fine cathedral built on what is believed to be the site of the martyrdom of St Alban. He was beheaded in the third century for defending Christians. In 2003, a BBC poll found St Alban was the favoured replacement for St George as England's patron saint. St Albans has provided the only English pope, Adrian IV, and a number of the city's bishops have gone on to be Archbishop of Canterbury, including the late Lord Runcie. The gay Anglican cleric, Jeffrey John, who was forced to step down as Bishop of Reading, was appointed Dean of St Albans in July 2004. The hill upon which the cathedral stands overlooks the valley of the river Ver, beyond which lie the buried ruins of the Roman city of Verulamium. St Albans' fast rail links to London make it an ideal location for commuters to reside. According to the 2001 census, St Albans has a high proportion of the work force that travel to work by train. This was an unexpected gain in 1997 for Labour, as they jumped from third place, and it is one of those constituencies which demonstrated Labour's appeal to the middle classes. Indeed, it was the Labour constituency with the lowest unemployment in 2001 and the sitting MP Kerry Pollard saw his lead increase to 10.2%.
