Description |
This is geographically a very large constituency, consisting of small towns and villages including Wymondham, Diss, Harleston and Loddon. They are invariably full of listed buildings, nature reserves and many of them still have weekly markets. These towns provide attractive residential accommodation for Norwich commuters and there have been many private residential developments over the last 30 years, causing an increase in the population. This has been one reason for the frequent boundary changes, most recently in 1995. It is more middle aged and middle class than the average seat. Other than agriculture and tourism, the most notable source of employment is car manufacturing. Lotus has its headquarters and factory at Hethel, 11 miles south of Norwich, and specialist sports car manufacturer Triking and Racing Technology Norfolk Ltd, which makes Audi touring cars, are also based there. Aside from these, and a number of food processing plants for the large amount of food produced locally, businesses here tend to be small and often family run. Conservative MP Richard Bacon won the seat at his first attempt in 2001 with a hearty majority, after the incumbent John MacGregor stepped down.
