Description |
The name of this seat is somewhat misleading, since Huntingdon is not the largest town in the constituency. That honour falls to St Neots, a town which was cobbled together out of three linked conurbations - Eynesbury, Eaton Scoton and Eaton Ford - to take London overspill in the 1960s. With its neighbour St Ives, it is the largest urban centre in the seat, although Huntingdon itself has the advantage of better links to London, making it a base for the seat's commuting population. The rest of the constituency is a reasonably affluent part of Cambridgeshire, to the north-west of the county town. This is, by and large, a land of golf courses, detached housing and Rotary Clubs and as such is seen as quintessential Tory country. In the 1990s, the party romped home here with enormous majorities though this was helped considerably by the incumbent being the then prime minister, John Major, whose national profile and considerable local popularity ensured that the party won absolute majorities. When Mr Major stepped down in 2001, his successor Jonathan Djanogly won his own sizeable mandate although the vote share slipped just below 50%.
