Description |
Set in the south east corner of Hertfordshire, bordering Essex, this constituency contains the towns of Hertford and Bishop's Stortford, with the other key towns being Ware and Sawbridgeworth. The constituency is affluent, with a significant proportion of workers in the professional and managerial sectors. Many living in the seat commute into London, with trains running regularly into the city. Hertford's history goes back to Roman times, and it is also reputed to be the location of the first Church Synod meeting in 673. The Danes captured the area in the 9th Century, but it was the Normans who first built a castle here. The castle has since been the centre of the town and in continual use, and was home to parliament and the law courts when London was gripped by the Plague in the 1500s. The Knights Templars were imprisoned in the castle by Edward II, who believed they were holding a lost treasure. The Templars captured Jerusalem during the Crusades and were known as "keepers of the Holy Grail". The Conservative vote has slipped since 1992, when Bowen Wells took a majority of 31%. In 2001, the poor result for the Tories was largely blamed on the fact that Mr Wells was standing down after 22 years. Nevertheless, they won the seat with an 11.9% majority.
