Description |
Hemel Hempstead constituency centres on the 1940s new town of Hemel Hempstead, but the surrounding area in West Hertfordshire is mainly countryside and it is relatively middle class for a new town. A classic planned town, it has seen substantial development in the last decade. It was one of several new towns in the county to fall to Labour in 1997. There has been a settlement here for centuries. It grew as a country market town and was granted its first borough charter by Henry VIII. During the 19th Century, in Apsley, the industrial revolution in paper making was masterminded. Dixons also has its national headquarters here. This constituency was another middle-class seat where Labour's vote increased in 2001. Although Hemel Hempstead is traditional Tory territory, particularly in the old town, Labour have clawed back in the estates such as Adeyfield and Bennetts End. Hemel Hempstead is high on the Conservatives' target list.
