Description |
Steeped in history, Colchester claims to be Britain's oldest recorded town. It was Britain's first Roman capital and became a Norman centre. In the English Civil War, Colchester was a stronghold for the parliamentary Roundheads. Today, it remains a famous garrison town and is home to the University of Essex. Before the 1997 general election, Colchester was divided into two separate seats - Colchester North and Colchester South & Maldon. Both were held by Conservatives. This seat, however, did not see a Tory victor. In one of the most closely fought three-way fights of the election, the Lib Dems won with less than 35% of the vote, and fewer than 2,000 votes separated the three main parties. With the help of incumbency and a strong and distinctive local presence, the Lib Dem MP Bob Russell managed to hold his seat with an increased majority in 2001 - much of his larger majority came from Labour voters, but there was even a small further swing away from the Conservatives. The seat remains, however, finely balanced and recent years have seen local gains for the Conservatives who now control the council.
