Description |
Most of this constituency is fairly rural, with Sawston being the largest single community and other small towns like Bassingbourn and Whittlesford dotted around the countryside. The farming is mostly arable with grass crops predominant, although there is also some cattle farming. The village of Grantchester, favourite of Cambridge day-trippers and home to Lord Archer, is also located within the Cambridgeshire South constituency. The seat also laps the fringes of Cambridge and contains two of the university's colleges - Girton and Homerton and the Institute of Molecular Biology. Addenbrooke's Hospital is also here. However, for all of the seat's physically rural character, these days it is something of a commuter-belt haven with many people travelling daily into London and a smaller number into Cambridge itself. Conservative incumbent Andrew Lansley has scored substantial majorities in both of his sallies in this seat. The Liberal Democrats have a fairly solid vote here, and do well in local elections.
