Description |
Although the county to which it lends its name is generally seen as a quintessential Tory home county, the town of Bedford itself is increasingly a diverse and multicultural town. It has a mix of different ethnic communities, with centres of Asian, Greek, Italian, black and Irish voters, and a good mix of industry and commercial facilities, as well as a satellite campus of De Montfort University. Nonetheless, the town had a history of Conservative loyalty which only wavered in landslide years for Labour. But the boundary changes which came into effect in 1997, as a result of the increasing population of the town, excised the rural hinterland to the north of the county which had previously helped to tip the constituency towards the Conservatives. The seat is now a much better prospect generally for Labour with the party's Patrick Hall winning with a 15.2% majority in 2001.
